: This past summer I took over the gardening duties at my parents motel. They have 560 Roses and lots of Dahlia,s and I have also added Fuchsia,s,Dephiniums and Cleomes and hosta,s these my mother liked but the scabiosa,s and gazania,s and cosmos were not a hit with the resident critic, and she doesn't want shrubs ,any ideas would be appreciated as I have such a large area to weed

Wow, that's quite a collection of roses and quite a job. Sounds like fun. My suggestion would be to go to the library and get a few books on gardening. Many have a plant encyclopedia in the back where you can pick out plants that she might like and show her the pictures.

If you need more info on a particular plant, you could go to and put the Latin name in quotes like this "Scabiosa caucasica". You can also click on the 'Images' box above the search box and get pictures, since sometimes the plant encyclopedias don't have the kind of picture you are looking for.

Since you don't mention your zone, I would hesitate to recommend a lot of plants that might not thrive. You seem to have a mix of annuals and perennials.
