how to store gernaniums for the winter

: Could anyone out there please tell me how I would store my gernaniums for the winter.  I live in Michigan and would like to save them.  I heard that if you dig them up and put them in a brown bag in the basement they would keep.  Then in the spring you would take them out and replant them.  Is this correct?
