sweet pea buds dropping

The very small buds on climbing sweet pea are dropping (they separate just behind the bud) and there is no evidence of insects,etc. Soil moisture is OK,and plants seem healthy. Have just started blooming, and there are a few mature flowers. This is in Pasadena,California.
Would appreciate any info or hearing from anyone with similar experience. Thanks
