Transplanting Tulips

I have just been fortunate enough to receive some tulip bulbs. The person they are from just pulled them from the ground - leaves & all. Should I wait until the fall to plant the bulbs? What do I with the bulbs in the mean time to make sure they will still be good by the fall.
