: Yes you can cut petunias back, in fact when I plant them in spring the first thing I do is run over them with a lawnmower or cut them down completly with a pruner. This forces them to spread out faster into the area I want filled. I have done many experements with petunias since I plant so many, and I always get the best results (more flowers, less legs) with the ones I regularly trim. Just remember: If you have a large area don't cut all your plants back at once or it will really look empty.
