Black birds eating my marigolds

I've read a few post's about rabbits eating the flowers off the marigolds, but I have witnessed these black birds just feasting on them. The plants are growing like mad, with hundreds of buds, but before they get a chance to open, the darn birds eat every single one. Also, they only go after the ones in the backyard (east side of house). The ones in front go un-touched. What's up with that?!!
Any ideas for combating this problem would be greatly appreciated.
