trimming climbing roses

I need some advice. I have a 5 or 6 year old climbing rose bush at the end of my porch. I deadhead after blooms are gone, trimming back to just before leaves of 5. It is gorgeous and blooms from early spring until the frost takes it. My question is this, should I ever cut it clear back? I have a friend that told me that I should cut the canes clear down every couple of years. But I worry that it would not grow back to give me the privacy I desire. Thanks for the advice.
