what's eating marigolds

I'm having a terrible time with something eating flats of marigolds! They totally eat the flowers, leaves, stems, everything! Nothing is left so I can't check for slugs or the like. What could it be and what can I do? I put out mothballs all around the beds in hopes that it will curtail the destructive behavior on the few plants that i have left.
