Getting the Aloe Vera Gel

: My great-grandma recently passed away and she owned several aloe vera plants.  I had always loved them, so I went ahead and picked them up.  Now that I have them, I would like to use their medicating gel, but I have no idea where to start.  Could someone please point me in the right direction?  Thanks!
