: I have some very big aloe plants outside and i covered them with leaves this winter, but they kept being blown off, so the frost and snow got to them. Will they come back this summer or should i forget about them or can i do anything to help them come back?

Hi Rhonda,

I don't know where you live so I don't know how severe your winter was. If the roots weren't damaged by the freeze, then there is hope. Cut off any leaves that are mushy and hope for the best. If they have frozen then there isn't anything you can do.

If they do make it, next year you can try again by making a cage out of chicken wire to cover the plants after you've piled on the leaves so they won't blow off.

Also consider digging up any 'pups' you get and bring those indoors for the winter.

Most aloe are from South Africa and don't like temps below 50*.

Good luck,
Newt
