ALOE VERA PROBLEMS

I have or had a large aloe vera that I must have over watered because the leaves started rotting at the stem and finally just fell over. The very top part of the plant looks healthy and I cut the main stem just above the rotting part and I want to know if I can transplant this top portion. Their were a few pups about 4 inches tall and I just left them as they were. Please tell me if I can successfully get the large top portion growing again and how? Thanks much, Gay
