Hi Nancy,
Sounds like rot. These plants don't like a lot of water. Take a look at these FAQ's and see if they might be helpful.

If not, you might want to ask these folks. Let them know if this is a houseplant or in the ground. If it's outdoors in the ground, let them know your zone or state.

Also, please remove your caps lock on your keyboard. In computer language it means you are yelling and it's hard on the eyes.
