aloe vera

My aloes always look ugly. I've inherited them from my mom, and so they're not always pretty when I get them. The arms break off so easily and I had one that suffered from frost last year. It survived and I repotted it, but it's still kinda chopped up from where I removed leaves. How can i prevent them from breaking or bending?
