Hi Valerie,
The best way to keep the plants from looking tattered is to keep them in a place where they won't get bumped into. As they age, they often lose some of their lower leaves. Aloe doesn't have 'arms', but leaves. Are you maybe talking about another plant? Here's a picture of an aloe vera.
