Aloe Plant

:    I have a rather large aloe plant, well one piece of it had broken off at the root.  I had transplanted it in another pot.  Now the leaves are roting and falling out of the pot,or else they are just laying there dying.  What can I do to help this poor plant. This aloe plant means a lot to me because it was a gift.  I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you Cathy
