I have a little back yard, which my dog uses to pee , but now I want to plant veggies next year, so I would like to know how I can clean the soil or disinfect it or what to do. I don't have any idea what to do because I am not very experienced when it comes to gardening. Please, help me!!!!

    Dear Patorolo,

Howdy, Coach Dave here and I work for The Home Depot and I think I can help you with some ideas.

First thing to remember is, although the idea of any animal waste product is unappetizing, the reality is that most of what you eat has been fertilized with animal waste. So washing one's vegetables is essential for good health.

You could start by getting a large bag of mulch (which is available in various sizes from most garden centers), and turn the soil over and mix with the mulch for a "fresh start".
Mulching will naturally will start the cycle of microbes disposing of animal waste.

Another good idea would be to make a small retaining wall to keep soil run off to a minimum during the rainy season. A retaining wall usually offers an aesthetic feature that say's "Garden". Make sure there is somewhere for the excess water to go. A bed of pea gravel underneath the garden will assure you have proper drainage for years to come.

Now let me be the first to welcome you to the rewarding world of home grown veggies. Not only do home grown vegetables taste better, but saving money seems to never go out of style. I hope you have found another suitable spot for your loyal dog to do it's business.

If you have more questions don't hesitate to ask, I can usually be found at: Welcome to The Home Depot Community - Welcome to The Home Depot Community answering questions.

    Yours Respectfully,
    Coach Dave
