    3 trunk peach tree

Help! I know very little about gardening, but I'm determined to learn. I have a five year old peach tree that has three trunks - is this OK? I was told it would help my trees to prune them (did not know that!) I got confused because I have three trunks/leader branches off the root ball of the tree. These do not branch off each other but are independant. Two of them are quite large, the third "smallest trunk" is still more than 3 inches across and makes up about one/third of the tree. The tree is about 12 feet tall, and about the same wide - and has a bunch of tiny green peaches all over the place. What should I do? NOWHERE on the internet can I find any info on this. Any help would be very, very appreciated!

    Hi Rhonda,
Guess I should say "welcome to the wonderful world of gardening" but you really seem so stressed. The situation can be corrected. This site shows you how to do it. If you feel that you can't, contact a certified arborist to do it for you.

    Hi Rhoda,

Here's some more info. to add to Newt's: it's another link to pruning apricot trees. If the tree is multitrunked than have no fears. Take a good look at it right now or the next time it's in bloom - are the flowers on each different trunk the same size/color? Does the fruit turn out the same? If it becomes apparent that the trunks are actually trunks, vs. a trunk with a couple suckers, than there should be no problem in taking care of it - just treat it like a normal tree. The only thing to watch for is structural problems - ie. are the trunks being too weighted by the fruit? Do they seem to be unsound? Let us know what you find....

    PruningGal,
I had to giggle with that link, thinking I was getting a new one to add to my looooong list. It's the same one I gave!! :D Got anymore? I'm always looking for good ones. I did find your info about the blossoms interesting and helpful! See, learn something new everyday.

    Hugs,
