Hi there. I'm looking to plant an African Sumac tree grown from a seedling and potted. I'm wondering how the root mass will spread and if proximity to septic systems will be a problem (i.e. if it will do damage to the pipes/lines).

    Any help would be great!

    Hi Sit Flier,

African sumac - Rhus lancea can be a messy tree, especially the females when they drop their friut.* They do shed their leaves almost continuously in summer.* Their roots go deep so I wouldn't think they'd be a good candidate for planting near a septic system.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Thank you for the response. I think I will find a more suitable spot for it.
