containable bamboo for Northeast gardener?

Hi,
I am a leary bamboo planter because of all the types I hear of that have shallow runners that expand their groves quickly like a weed. Does anyone out there know of a kind that will survive Northeast winters without browning, and NOT take over my yard?? :?: (I am in CT. and love the look of bamboo)..
