list of plants from spring thru fall?

I want to start a garden this year & eventually have flowers blooming from spring thru fall but I don't know where to start! Is there a list somewhere that will name flowers in the order in which they will bloom? For example: what ones first bloom in March, followed by what blooms in April, then May, etc.... I would really appreciate anyone's help w/this. I have never had a garden & I am so overwhelmed about starting one, but eventually this is what I would like to accomplish. I want perennials for the most part & I know that alot of flowers start w/bulbs. If I can get that far, then I would like to add different annuals every year.

I should add that I have some sunny areas & alot of shade, altho more sun in the early spring before the trees leaf out.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me w/this!!!!

When I first started to learn about gardening I would read books. Flowers are not the only thing you should consider about your garden...you should throw in a few evergreens which bloom and provide some substance to your winter garden. No one wants to see a dirt pile in the winter, this is why we add a few evergreens.

In review of Timberpress, they have this new book out to help out with perennials. Timber Press: When Perennials Bloom

    Hi Roseyposey,

Some great advice and links from Backyard Gardener. I'd like to add that you will need to know your plant hardiness zone as well. You don't say where you live, so if you aren't in the US I have links for several other countries to determine your plant hardiness zone.

I too read books to learn about gardening and when plants bloom. One that had the type of charts you are looking for was a book by Martha Stewart. It was Martha Stewart Gardening, Month by Month. I got it from the library and photocopied the pages I wanted to keep for when plants bloom. If I remember it also listed plants by color of bloom. It was one of her earlier books and there's a picture of her on the cover when she was younger.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
