    Exclamation septic water table high

    Hello,

I live in CT, behind my back yard is a swamp, and recently (over the past 5 years) the swamp has grown towards my house and into my septic leach field. this year theres been at least 45 days where standing water has been seen above my leach field and when the wind blows into the house the smell is outrageous. this past week we have back filled roughly 5 inches of sand and 3 inches of sifted topsoil (no rocks), but i fear this will eventually wash away, and the sewage water will be back again. we had blueberries back there but got rid of them and ever since theres been a lot of extra water. so my question to you(S) is what plants can u suggest placing over and around this extra water. i don't want any trees. id prefer a grass, shrub, or anything that wont be invasive, or grow taller than 4-5ft tall. also if u have any other suggestions besides plants you are welcome to suggest. btw the septic has been pumped recently

    thank you.

    Allen

    Hi Allen,

I would suggest you build a berm tall, wide and long enough to keep the water away from your septic field. You can plant trees, shrubs and plants on the berm. It's basically a dirt levy, but it can deteriorate over time.

You may want to contact whoever owns the swamp and your local authorities as another person's water shouldn't be allowed to invade your property.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
