This White Pine was not pruned last year, and the length of the candle from last year's growth seems un-proportional to the rest. This is our backyard and I would like it to look nice.
I am a total amateur here - but if I understand correctly I can't cut at last year's growth as that is just wood now and won't regenerate new buds.
I'm wondering if I should I take the longest side growth branch from last year (on the left in the photo) and tie that to last year's candle to make a new top? Clip off all of this year's growth and just let this be the new top? If so, should I be concerned with that branch breaking at the trunk when I bend it?
