Hello all.* I have a few small beds of iron plants that are now getting too much sun, since a neighbor removed a few small trees.* Anyhow, I would like to relocate them to a shadier spot around the foundation of my house.* First, is there anything I should know about digging them up?* Second, what kind of additive should I use when replanting them in their new location.* and Third... how should I prepare the holes left by the iron plants (additives, etc.) to accomodate my new heather bushes?* I am in North Florida and am wondering how much the time of year will effect my transplantation.* Any advice is appreciated!* Thanks.

    Hi TallyCat,

I'm wondering it you are talking about Cast Iron plant - Aspidistra elatior.* Is this what you have?

If so, prepare the new bed by adding 2" to 3" of compost and mix it in.* Plant, water and mulch.* They have a large root system so have a sturdy shovel.

You don't say which heather or heathers you will be growing.* Some like acid soil, some like the soil lean.* Do you know the name of your heather(s)?

Do your transplanting in the early morning if the temps have warmed up as this will cause less stress on your plants, but both of these are quite hardy and can take a bit of stress.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
