Where are you? Which plants to recommend will depend on your Zone, or region, or soil type.

I like periwinkles: either type, but I was thinking of the Catharanthus roseus or Madagascar periwinkle. It's actually pretty hard to kill, but will reseed itself, takes a radical trimming and will come back better than ever. A little susceptible to aphids at the end of summer for me, though. Looks good with ruellia or your Mexican petunia. Both are more likely to be perennial in more tropical or subtropical climes, though.

You might try lantana varieties, too. I find the yellow flowered does better than the lavender flowered one in terms of persisting through winter, spreading fairly well, even rooting leggy stems, without needing aggressive trimming. Also deeper than Deep South.

I'm sorry. I live in zone 9. Thanks!

Also, it's usually hot, humid and dry.

You also might try gaillardia or blanket flower. They blossom all summer on the Atlantic coast of Florida, and by summer, I mean at least six months of the year. They can even grow on dunes. They will spread fairly easily and reseed, but I think the same plants will be perennial for you as they have for me, dying only when hit by a freeze. They are the red and yellow rayed flower. If you don't have wild places to collect some seed or plants, I'm sure they will be found in any native nursery.

You could try Showy Evening Primrose. It likes hot dry conditions and blooms for aout 6 weeks. It spreads quickly and easily. Lavender Munstead is another good one for long blooms and little care.

Good luck.

Hosta and coral bells are good perrenials which grow easily. Hosta comes in hundreds of varieties.
