    Roses

    Hello,

I've never been on a forum before so I'm sorry I really don't know much about it. I love gardening but am finding it very frustrating at the moment as I have 4 x 4ft apricot roses across my back fence and don't know what to put between them. The garden is about 40ft long and about 3ft deep. I love the look of cottage gardens/borders but don't know where to start. The garden gets sun all through summer and not much in winter (it faces north). The roses are doing well though. Can anyone help me please? I have some mauve/pink Granny Bonnets (columbines) in at the moment but they are out of proportion with the roses.

    Thankyou
    Casper

    Hi Casper,

I'd like to try and help you with your design and plant recommendations, but I don't know where you live. Is that an English flag I see?

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

    Hi Newt
Thankyou for your reply. I live in Victoria, Australia in a temperate climate. We do get heavy frost in winter some days.
Looking forward to hearing from you

    Gosh Casper,

Oz is a little out of my range of plant recommendations. I realize that you said that this was your first time on a forum, but I'd really like to suggest that you do some reading here and maybe ask these folks. If you decide to post, do share all the information you have given here along with your location. Also, I think I understand that you have a 40ft run of fence with apricot roses spaced every 4ft. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you.

I wish you the best of luck and sorry I couldn't help more,

Thankyou for trying Newt.....I have put in some lambs ears and mauve daisies and lemon thyme and they look pretty with the roses so I think I will just keep to those colours and see how they go

    Casper,

Thanks so much for letting me know what you have done. It sounds lovely and the plants you have chosen will grow here where I live as well. You will want to keep an eye on those lambs ears as they tend to really spread fast after two or three years. The bees love the flowers, but do remove the spent ones so they don't end up everywhere.

    Regards,
    Newt
