lack of pumpkin growth

I started growing a giant pumpkin in april following the guidelines at giant pumpkin. Its not growing like it should. The vine is only about 6 foot long and has no side vines shooting out. What could be the problem and can it be fixed??

if would help to know where you are ...
(where I am lack of pumpkin growth is usually due to lack of water).
