We have three alberta spruce trees and only 1 of the 3 are doing well. My question is ... do we need to have more acidic soil? If so, what do we do? We live in southern Wisconsin. Any ideas? They are thinning out and the needles are falling off.

Hi Larry,
If the needles are falling off from the inside of the tree it shouldn't be any problem as they tend to shed their needles from the inside out. They should grow back.
What is the ph of your soil?

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
Hi Larry,
I just came upon this site, and joined to find out some more info on the Drawf Alberta Spruce.
I had the same problem as you, with needles falling off, the trees not doing well, and also, the needles browning, and finally, two out of 5 dying.
So I sent off a sample to the Pennsylvania State University. Their reply was, I had Spider Mite infestation.
The only solution to the problem is to spray the trees with a product made by Sunoco called "Sunspray Ultra Fine Oil."
Nothing else will kill the Mites, and they usually continue to grow especially when you use other bug killers to kill off good insects that normally would eat the Mites. I hope this helps.
Cordially,
Ed K.
