I have 5 foot oak tree.* I don't know much about oaks.* Is this normal -* instead of one center stalk it branched out into two.* I didn't know if I should of pruned the new branch out, but I didn't and it kept on growing.* By the way, my sister started this tree from an acorn about 5 or more years ago.* This spring the bunnies, who I feed oats to all winter, decided to* munch on the trunk.* I thought it was goner, but the main strong trunk leafed out as did the second trunk.* This wound caused the tree to send up shots or suckers around the tree's base.* Should I prune the shots out?* Should I have pruned out the second trunk, keeping a main strong trunk?* Should I prune out the whole tree and keep the strong sucker?

    Hi Frosty,

Without seeing a picture it's difficult to say what to do, but my gut feeling is to prune to one trunk. The suckers probably shot up from the stress.* Break those off where they connect to the root.* This site is a bit complicated, but I've selected a few pages for you to look at.

This will take a bit to go through, but shows how they grow trees properly from seedlings in a nursery.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
