Without seeing a picture it's difficult to say what to do, but my gut feeling is to prune to one trunk. The suckers probably shot up from the stress.* Break those off where they connect to the root.* This site is a bit complicated, but I've selected a few pages for you to look at.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
