    japanese flowering cherries

    hey,
I have a small area where I would like to plant a small flowering tree. I am considering a flowering cherry. However, I have heard flowering cherries don't live very long. If this is true, what would be a good small flowering tree?

    thanks for any help,

    Hi Pete,
Small flowering trees that come to mind:

Redbud - berries for birds and nectar for butterflies and bees
    Dogwood - ditto as above
    Serviceberry - ditto as above
Plum - ditto as above - specifically:
    Prunus spp.
    P. americana (wild plum)
    P. angustifolia (chickasaw plum)
    P. munsoniana (wild goose plum)
Star magnolia - good for bees and butterflies
Fringe tree - if you have a male and female, you'll have berries for birds. The male has larger more and flowers.
    Golden rain tree
    Golden Chain tree
Crabapple - get one with small crabapples for birds.
