    newbie-Problem pruning wax myrtles

We have some wax myrtles that have gotten really out of hand in our very large side yard. We are novice gardeners, and my husband was considering cutting back all growth on them this fall. I'm not sure that the myrtles will grow back. Does anyone have any experience with wax myrtles that could help? Any suggestion or experience would be much appreciated!!! :) Thanks!!

    Hi c_k_ellis,

Heading back the wax myrtles are not the best way to prune them. They will give erratic and weak growth if that approach is taken. They are best pruned like a small tree - ie. thinned for a lacier approach. If what you mean by the myrtle getting out of hand is that it's getting too big for it's current placement, you might have to consider replacing it with something that is more site appropriate. Otherwise, you'll have to deal with pruning it in an unsightly or improper way to manage it.

    Good luck,
