Thread: Tree selection

Hi,*we're new to landscaping and need some help.* We live in north San Diego county in zone 9-10 and need a street tree to help block a view from an approaching road to a patio we have on a hill in our side yard.* We would like one which is no taller than 20' tall at full maturity so we can still see over it to our view of hot air balloons in the afternoons.* We'd enjoy one that is evergreen, with flower or fruits and has strong enough branches for a child's swing when it gets mature.* We don't want a pine tree.* The area has full sun and sandy soil with*reduced drainage when it rains heavily.* I've been recommended to try a Loquat tree but wanted some more choices.* Does anyone have any ideas?* Thanks for any help you can give us.

Are you expecting to get a tree that will stop growing and producing cells at 20 feet tall?

Also, the slower growing a tree is, the more expensive they are. Or, for a lesser price, it may be small.

How large would you like to start?

    Thanks for responding,

We'd like a tree that will grow to a maximum of 20 feet but could be smaller.* We don't really care the price or how small the tree is when we plant it.* We just really care about the long term effect of the tree.

Drive around the neighborhood and take a picture of a tree and ask the local nursery.* I see a tree in my mind, but don't know the name.*

    Hi CaHuskies,

I think you will have a problem with finding a small tree with all your requirements, especially the swing.* Think about some of the smaller hollies.* You will need a male and female for berries.* This site is for the Gulf Coast, but some of the same hardiness zones.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
