Cabbage growth

I've lost most of my cabbage plants to an animal, probably deer, but not sure. Anyway, most of the center leaves and stems have been chewed off, but the larger lower leaves are still there. How will it grow from now on? Should I pull off the leaves that have damage and hope for new center growth?

I cut my first cabbage of the year about 2 weeks ago (after a rainstorm caused it to split :( ) I left the outside leaves and stem there and now there are 3-4 small cabbages growing on it. I have had this happen on occasion in past years, but not every plant all the time. If you are lucky you might get some babies if you leave it alone.
