Thread: Growing Lettuce

  1. #1
We have a large vegetable garden, but this is our first time to grow head lettuce.* We have problems with sand getting into leafy plants like spinach and mustard greens and are concerned about how to deal with sand if it gets into head lettuce.* How do we keep out the sand?

    Hi SpeckledCat,

The best way I know of is to put down a layer of mulch.* It will help to keep soil from splashing onto your lettuce.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Thank you, Newt.* We'll mulch and see what happens.* We're in Zone 8 which isn't very kind to cool weather plants, so wish us the best.

You are so very welcome.* I find it's best to plant cool season veggies like lettuce in early spring and late summer into fall.*

    Enjoy your 'salad'.

No matter what I have tried, my lettuce will usually have some dirt or sand on it. I just wash it thoroughly once it is harvested.
