I was cutting up my pumpkin so I could stew it for tomorrow's feast, and when I opened it, I thought it had molded, but then my brain kicked in and I realized that mold spores would have had no way to get into the pumpkin. So what was this hair that was all over the inside of the fruit? Root hairs. That's right, several of the seeds had sprouted inside the pumpkin. One of them was an old enough sprout to be ready in just a few days to shed the shell of it's seed, with just a little green peeking around the edges.

My question is, what can I do with this little plant? I'd like to keep it and let it grow, but not only do I not have a clue how to do that, but we just had our first cold snap here and I don't want to put the little thing in the ground right now.

    So what do I do?

    Hi Jen,

You could try growing the seed indoors in a pot, but I doubt you would have room for the vine once it gets some size on it.* You don't say where you live or your hardiness zone so it's impossible to say if planting it outdoors would work.* Here's a site with all kinds of info on pumpkins, though I doubt you'll find your situation here.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
