Clematis in a container

Hello!* I live in NY and started large bloomed clematis in several buckets.* I would like to know if I should prune them back in the fall and take the buckets in the house or leave them and cover them.* They are blooming nicely and I will be training them to a trellis on my porch soon.* Thanks for all the info I have found here.

Hi Sheryl,

It depends on which clematis you have and what hardiness zone you're in as to whether or not they need to be in a greenhouse for the winter.* Pruning is done by what pruning group they are.* Do you know the names of your clematis?

For pruning groups you should be able to figure out which is which from here.* Scroll down a little more then half way.

Hello, I found out which clematis I have.* It is called "fireworks", and has blue petals with a red stripe down the center.* It says "prune group 2", which I do not know about.* Thanks for the answer Newt!!

Great!* It belongs to pruning group B or 2.* Look to the right column here. You can click on 'light' or 'zones' for more info.* It shows how to prune if you click on 'light'.

You don't say what zone you are in, but planted in the ground it's hardy from zones 4 to 8 or 9.* It depends on your zone as to how you care for it in a pot over the winter.* If you aren't sure of your hardines zone, here's a zip code zone finder.

Also there is a new Clematis variety by I think the name is Everson or Evenson, I can't remember the spelling that are made to grow in pots.
