What a lovely gift!* I'm thinking you are hardiness zone 10.

If so, it should be able to grow outdoors for you as it's hardy to zone 9b.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Palm trees are so neat, I was recently in Orlando, FL and saw an Old Man Palm (not sure what the Scientific name is). It was the coolest Palm I have ever seen. The trunk was covered with hair....wild!
Coccothrinax crinita aka Old Man Palm is from Cuba.* Neat plant.* :dude:* Here's some pics at different ages.

It may be root bound, so the water runs through the pot too fast. Then the roots don't benefit and the leaves turn brown.
