Tuberous Dahlias/Overwintering/Zone 5

[I am trying to save my dahlias from freezing over winter but I don't really have a good place to store them. Can I just leave them in the pots I grew them in and store them in my garage where they will be cold enough to not promote new growth but will not freeze? Will the dirt make the tubers rot?
