I recently bought a place in Charlottesville Virginia that has two pre Civil War log cabins and one very tall old pear tree. The tree is probably 75 feet tall at least and very skinny. It has a ton of fruit on it this year. The pears are squaty, maybe 2/3 the size of a Bartlett. The color is dingy brown with bright green flecks. The shape is the normal "pear" shape. I don't know about the taste because the one I picked has not ripened yet. Today is September 4th, 2008. I would appreciate advice on how to identify the tree. My place is about 5 miles from Montecello and I wondered if Mr. Jefferson might have spawned something in my direction.
