Thread: Grapes 3rd year

  1. #1
This is the 3rd year for my Grapevines.

    I have 9 vines 3 different varieties.

2 of the concord vines have what I'm thinking are way too many tiny clusters on them.

How many clusters can a young plant nourish?

I was thinking that I read to cut them back to 17 clusters per plant but I cannot find that info now.

I'm using the cardon*method of trellesing but with 3 wires.* I don't remember where I read to do that either.

The Niagra and catawba vines aren't so energetic as the concord.

    thanks for any help

For the Cardon system you will find the info on page 4 here.* You are correct that you will need to thin out the clusters as overcropping will result in poor fruit quality.

More info here on Cordon if you scroll down.

    Does that answer your questions?

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
