Starting a compost heap is a great way to provide nutrients for your lawn as well as *food and ornamental gardens. You can start a compost heap using vegetable matter from lawn, garden and your kitchen. Here's a link to a basic article on composting.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
