My blue spruce is losing bottom branches-I plan to cut them off so there will be about 2 feet of trunk showing. (until it gets to the point that the rest of the tree is dying). What would be good to plant underneath the tree?

I would say it would be best to have a circle of mulch.* Here's how to mulch a tree and more.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
