Maggie, you can certainly sow the seeds where you want it to grow.* If you remove the spent seed heads it won't seed around so much.* You can always google for images of the seeds.* You could do a serach with:
    butterfly weed seed
    Asclepias seed

You mention that it's next to an azalea so I'm wondering if it's getting enough sun.* Maybe that is making it spread out by seeking more sun.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

The butterfly weed took over.* The azalea is very small - about the size of an African Violet!* It never had a chance to get larger because the butterfly weed grew so large so fast!
Both of them are on the south side of the house, and get sun most of the day.* They are next to the house, with a small pond in front of them.* I am thinking about moving the azalea, and then moving the butterfly weed where the azalea is now.* That way, the azalea will be able to spread out, and the butterfly weed will still be next to the pond.* I think they will both be happier this way!

Maggie, if your azalea is an evergreen one it might be happier in part sun.* If it's deciduous then it can take full sun.* Just wait until September to make the move when the temps cool off.* :)
