I live in Nothern Calif and have recently discovered nut like hard cocoons under my lawn. The bug inside seems to have rear end pncers. Problem is racoons love them and are terin up my lawn. Any idea what this is?

Glad you told me where you live.* I suspect you are seeing armyworm pupa.* Is this what you see?

[align=left]Thks for your response. Unfortunately this is not it. The cocoon looks like it is made out of wood and is tapered like an almond shell (darker brown in color)*and rounder (rather than somewhat flat like an almond shell).[/align]

RDH, you are very welcome.* It would be helpful if you could post a picture.* Once we know what it is you will know if it causes any damage and what to do.* It might even be a beneficial insect pupa.
Are you seeing any damage to your turf?
