I live in Greenville, SC and I have a front yard with St Augustine that is very weedy and splotchy. I want to replace it with fescue and want to know the best method (time and money) of doing this... The STA is still dormant, can I put out fescue seeds? Thanks

That would be great. I went ahead and fertalized it about 4 weeeks ago with weed and feed desigend for St Augustine, and I still have awful dead spots and bad crab grass. We have had very consistant rainfall for a while now. Any suggestions?
Mike, you are very welcome! I have two sites about St. Augustine grass and both recommend plugs and not seed for this grass. Maybe you can dig out some plugs from a spot that isn't too noticeable and transplant them to your bare spots so they spread. One site is from Texas and the other from Florida. With a little more research you might be able to determine which variety you have.

If you still want to remove it and replace it with fescue, you might want to consider renting a power sod cutter.

I would recommend adding 2" to 4" of compost to your soil before you seed or sod and mixing it in with a till. Here's how to sod or seed. The prep is the same for both. You will also find info at the South Carolina Extension site above.
