Garden plant

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what this plant is? it's pretty hearty, survived wind and rain. The trunk is green and turns into bark at the base. Pretty thick. It's growing in a whisky barrel that used to have hot peppers in it last year. Bees love it.

Have dogs, want to make sure it is safe.
