Anyone know what this shrub/small tree is? It is growing in a ditch on my road (Iowa, zone 5). The leaves have recently turned a beautiful orangish red. Thanks

    Hi Bohemianalps,

The picture is a bit small, but it looks like some type of oak tree. Many oaks hybridize with each other.* You might be able to use this search engine from the Iowa Living Roadway Trust Fund.

If that isn't successful, try asking these folks at the UBC Botanical Garden.* Be sure to let them know where the tree grows.* Here's their main forums site so you can read their rules and register.* The second link is where you should post your question and pictures.

I'd love to know if you figure out what it is.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
