    Lost Plant on the Shoreline in the Puget Sound

    I assume this shrub was planted in the 1930's, when small shacks residents were all along Commencement Bay.

    Please help identify this shrub:

    Looks like a Chaenomeles. Possibly either C. japonica or C. speciosa. There are now many named cultivars in shades of red, pink and white.
    Try going back later in the year and you will find it full of small very hard fruits. These can be used to make a jam/jelly. In the U.K. the common name is Japanese quince.
    However your shrub is not to be confused with the true quince, which grows into a tree. Latin name Cydonia oblonga.
