Hi Jonathan,
I have no clue where you live or if you are even in the US, but from the looks of your soil, that's probably a weed.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
Hmm, thanks Newt.* I thought maybe it was something else because it doesn't look like the other weeds around here.* It's also next to my compost bin so I thought maybe a seed fell out and sprouted.
I'm in Pasadena, California, by the way.**
Uh oh.* Now Newt hangs her head!* :?* If there is nothing around that looks like it and it's next to the compost bin, let it grow a bit more and watch it.* It might be a treasure!* Do you grow veggies?* I'd love to know what it turns out to be.

I haven't yet, but I might start to now!* I've always wanted to grow veggies but I just have so little space.* Maybe this will inspire me.* I'm hoping it is something.
I think it might be a tomato plant.* Not sure though.**
It's definately something, we just don't know if it's something you would want.* It's not a tomato.* I was thinking something along the lines of brussel sprouts.* Well, you asked!
I could give you some links to look at weeds for your area if you feel you'd like to stare at the computer screen for a couple of hours.** Just let me know.
Btw, gently run your fingertips around the stem.* If the stem is square, it's a member of the mint family, even if it doesn't smell like it.
