Can someone help identify the shrub plant.* I saw it growing outside a building in Arlington, VA. Here are the photos:

    Hi Tomahawk,

That is a Taxus, possibly Taxus cuspidata aka Japanese yew.* There are many varieties of Japanese yew that grow in different shapes and to different heights and widths.* They are very hardy and you see them everywhere in our area.* In most instances they are planted as foundation plants and have to be constantly pruned, like your first picture.* That picture is of older shrubs like the ones I inherited.* They really want to be about 10' tall and wide.* They've been pruned to expose the lower 'trunk'.* You should find this helpful so you can see some of the different cultivars.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.
