I went hiking yesterday and we found some seeds that look like giant corn kernels. The tops feel 'hairy' like coconuts. Two of the three in my picture are pretty dried out, but the last one is fresh and new and wet. I live on O'ahu in Hawaii. We were in the forest. There were palms nearby as well as many other trees. I'm a computer guy, so, sadly, that's about all the hlepful information I can give. Any ideas?

    Hi Thad,

I'm at a loss to id your seed.* At first I thought it might be the seed from a cone such as a cycad would produce, but I can't find anything that looks like that.* I've looked through pics of many tropical seeds of trees and didn't find a match.* I'm asking another poster from Hawaii to take a look.* Maybe she can id it.

When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

That's a lauhala or screwpine. The whole "fruit"
*looks a bit like a pineapple.

(Thanks for the PM, Newt, I would have missed that post).

    Aloha,
    Maren (in Hilo)

I''m soaking my keys and will plant them today or tomorrow.

    Thanks!
